Background
As you may know, I attend Liberty University. I have been a student at Liberty for two years now, and lived in two different dorm rooms and I have also now moved off campus into a house with three other girls. My first year I lived in Commons Two, which is a hotel style room that only has two people, and has a private bathroom in the room. My second year I lived at the Hill for one semester which has three people per room, and communal bathrooms.
What I Loved About Dorm Life
My time in a dorm was enjoyable. I loved Commons and the Hill for different reasons. When I was in Commons I enjoyed only having one roommate and having a private bathroom. It was a nice way to come back to the room and relax after a long day. We also had a common room for everywhere on our floor to congregate in which let us know everyone on our floor.
While the Hill there are communal bathrooms and so you get to know everyone on your hall pretty quick, along with not many people keep their doors shut and so there is not much down time at the hill. It is great for an extrovert, but an introvert like myself it was a bit overwhelming.
The reason that I decided to move off campus was a mix of things like roommate issues, dorm issues, and the campus rules in general. Although, not one thing outweighed the others, it was just time for me to move off.
What I Love About Off-Campus Living
Now that I have been living in a house this last semester it has been a learning curve from diving to school, cooking my own food, and now being around people 24/7.
I will say as an introvert it is a dream. I have my own room again to recharge in, and I do not get into arguments about where to put my shoes or when to turn the light off at night. It has been amazing for my mental health.
Sometimes it can feel lonely if a lot of your friends are still on campus though as they will do something spur of the moment and not think to invite you, however, you also make new friends with roommates and other commuter students.
I have loved having my own kitchen again and being able to not have a curfew at night. It feels like I am finally adult living on my own and going to school. Living off campus also made it much easier to get an off-campus job as now I do not have to walk 15 minutes to my car before driving to work.
Would I Recommend Off-Campus Living?
I really think it depends on your personality and how long you have lived on campus for. I would 100% recommend staying on campus your first year at college even if your University does not require it. It lets you meet so many people and learn how to live well with people you might not always agree with. It also just gives you the experience of living in a dorm room.
Now, some people stay on campus all four years and love it, which are mostly extroverts who love being around people. I found that it was time for me to move off campus and have my own room again. I also enjoy driving to school and having that time to listen to music. I enjoy having my own kitchen and my own rules and curfew as well.
So, in all what I am trying to say is it really depends on your personality if you should move off campus or not. If you love living on campus then stay on campus. But in my experience I got tired of it and was longing to live in a house again with my own room!
